Gully gets the ball rolling PDF Print E-mail

GREEN Gully has kicked off its 2010 pre-season training, but it did not take place at its home fortress of Green Gully Reserve.

The squad, currently undermanned given players are still returning from the Christmas break, is running around on the artificial turf at St Bernards College, Essendon.
Coach Peter Ollerton said while it is not an ideal situation, building fitness was the main goal for the Cavaliers squad.
“Currently training on artificial turf at St Bernard’s in Essendon, but beggars can’t be choosers, but the boys seem happy down there.
“And we’re doing a bit of running around Albert Park lake, and we’re in the gym on Sundays, and doing strength and conditioning.”
The new faces at Green Gully Reserve include 2008 FFV Medal winner Graham Hockless and former Melbourne Knight Joshua Groenewald.
The one that got away for Ollerton in the pre-season was former Perth Glory striker Eugene Dadi, who was being hunted after his contract expired at Perth.

All is not lost for the Cavaliers despite Dadi’s recent signing to A-League team Wellington Phoenix, as Ollerton is quietly confident of having the big forward in the green and white at some point during the season.
“We tried to get Eugene Dadi, we were very close to getting him, but he went and signed for Phoenix, so we missed out on that.
“It doesn’t mean to say we might not get him throughout the year because he’s only on a short term contract (at the Phoenix).”
Ollerton said the numbers are slowly but surely building for the Cavaliers’ assault on season 2010.
“By the weekend (last weekend) we’ll have 17 (training with the squad). Plus we’ve got two boys playing at Melbourne Victory.
“The squad just needs one or two players to make sure everything’s fine, it’s a day-by-day proposition at the moment, and waiting for everyone to return from holidays.”
